OLO ry´s Sitsi rules for sitser
What are sitsis?
Sitsis are an academic dinner party with delicious food, refreshing drinks, lovely company and most importantly vivid stories and sitsi songs.
Like in school, you have to respect the sitsi rules, or there may be some consequences. You won’t need your phones during the sitsit- you can use them during breaks though.
Sitsi-rules:
1. Golden rule
The most important rule is respecting your fellow sitsigoers. It is especially important to respect and listen to the toastmasters, as they ensure the evening runs smoothly. Please do not talk over the toastmasters or anyone else—wait for your turn and enjoy the performances of others. By participating in the sitsis, you accept the punishments for breaking the rules. At OLO ry’s sitsis we follow Kaski’s Principles for Safer Space.
Last but not least, remember to have fun and meet new people!
2. Behaviour
During the speech or song you are not allowed to eat or chat.
In Oulu, we are allowed to drink whenever we want. Remember that each drink must have been sung first.
Disruptive shouting or other violations of sitsi rules may result in a punishment from the toastmasters.
3. Clapping
During sitsit you never clap your hands, instead you can hit the table. Those who got a punishment never get applauded but rather booed.
4. Skool
After a song or a speech everyone will raise a glass for a skool. You’ll start with raising your glass diagonally to the left, then diagonally to the right, and finally to the person in front of you (and each time you ‘’skool’’).
5. Speaking turns and songs
To get a speaking turn, stand up by saying “kilinkolinkilinkolin” and introduce yourself.
-
For example. ”Hi, I´m Teppo!” (Other sitsi goer´s: “Hi Teppo!”)
I would like to tell you a joke/story/suggest a song number 13...”
Sitsi songs are found in Kaskinen or separate song booklet.
-
If you know unwritten additional verses to the songs, singing them is highly encouraged! Request an extra verse by saying: "Mellis/mellansuup."
-
Sing along even if you don’t know the melody of the song —there’s always room next to the note!
6. Toilet
If anyone needs to use the toilet, you are free to do so whenever. We do ask, however, you wont stay loitering outside but return right after.
7. Secret tasks
Under your napkins you’ll find secret tasks. By completing the task, you can earn small rewards from the toastmasters😉.
8. Staff
The staff is in sitsis for your convinience, so please don’t hesitate to contact them either. Fruthermore, there is a first aid person, as well as the harassment contact person(s) available, whom you can reach out to in any harassment situations.
9. General manners:
The toastmasters will announce the breaks and their duration. During breaks, you may use the restroom, smoke, socialize away from the table, and eat (if permission was given earlier). Return to your seat immediately when the break ends.
Regarding singing, it is said that if the main course is still warm when eaten, the toastmaster hasn’t done their job properly 😉.
Be kind and have a good time with others!
10. The sitsi goer’s checklist:
-
If there’s a dress code, remember to follow it.
-
If you wish, bring your own drinks. Usually, two servings are provided at sitsit. Avoid glass bottles to prevent broken shards!
-
Before sitsis it’s not polite to get started —we all start from the same level 😊.
-
Be in time! Sitsis starts at 6PM, so it is recommended to be there by 5:45PM. The academic quarter does not apply to this event.
-
Keep your phone silent! You can use them during breaks though.
-
Find the seat with your name on it – the goal is to meet new people!
